BPA-Free Natural Rubber Baby Pacifier by Bibs

The Bibs brand is the pacifiers’ brand that is designed and manufactured in Denmark. The shield surrounding the nipple in this pacifier for babies does not lay close to the skin but instead draws away to prevent a drool rash. And it is the main feature that differs from other pacifiers in our review. It is made of natural rubber materials that are 100% BPA free, PVC and phthalates free. Moreover, the shape and materials of the pacifier imitate a mothers’ nipple. The set includes 2 pacifiers for newborn babies in size 1 which is suitable for ages 0-6 months. It is a high-quality product approved by pediatricians and orthodontists. I think this is one of the best pacifiers for a breastfed baby you can buy right now.

Advantages and disadvantages of using pacifiers

As any product pacifiers for infants have several positive and negative effects of using it. In this guide, we would like to offer you a review of the main pros and cons of pacifiers.

Advantages:

  1. The main advantage of the pacifiers is reducing the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). The American Academy of Pediatrics has made a research about the reasons of infant death in the USA and developing island states and found out that the level of SIDS in the regions where parents use pacifiers is much lower than where parents do not want to use them. The reason is that pacifiers prevent babies from tongue retraction and a cessation of breathing while in a deep sleep. Moreover, the pacifiers don’t let newborn babies choke during the sudden spinning up.
  2. All newborns have a sucking instinct that needs to be satisfied. But moms need rest when their infants use their breast for sucking but not for eating milk. When it happens, the pacifiers are the best way for moms to take a break. For bottle-fed babies, it is necessary to use a pacifier after each feeding to promote healthy oral development.
  3. The pacifiers also have a calming effect and may relieve some stress in your baby.

Disadvantages:

  1. Babies may get attached to a pacifier. It is one of the habits that die hard especially once your baby turns into a more inflexible toddler.
  2. The pacifiers can also be the reason for breastfeeding problems. In order to ensure the baby does not experience any problems, it is better to hold off using a pacifier until your baby is used to breastfeeding.
  3. You should also know that a lot of infants might be allergic to the pacifier. By consulting a pediatrician, you can eliminate any potential allergic reactions.

You should remember that it is completely up to you to give or not to give a pacifier to your baby. All you need to do is to watch his/her reaction. If it has a calming effect on your baby, it is better to give it to him/her. But if your baby continues to be restless, he/she might be hungry or feeling some other discomfort.

MY PERSONAL OPINION:

I would like to recommend the research by Australian scientists (Mauch CE et al 2012) who wanted to find out all about why, when and with what consequences lactating mothers give dummies to their children. Of 670 mothers, 79% gave a dummy, with one in four doing so at the insistence of the child’s grandmother, and one in five on the recommendation of a nurse or midwife. Most of the women believed the arguments that this would make the baby more relaxed and help him sleep better; one in five believed that a baby’s dummy is absolutely natural and necessary. The result was that most women who began to regularly give the baby a nipple in the first weeks of life ended their breastfeeding before the baby was one month old. Here is a clear picture showing how, according to the study, the duration of breastfeeding depended on the use of a dummy (the horizontal axis is the duration of feeding in weeks, the bottom line of the graph is those who started giving a dummy in the first month of life; the average – those who offered a dummy only after the child has completed the month; and the top – those who never gave a dummy to their child).

Based on this research and my personal experience, I recommend that you carefully give a pacifier to your child for up to a month (but this does not mean that it should not be given at all, just do it intermittently). Accordingly, after your child turns one month old, you can gradually begin to give him a pacifier more often, there will definitely be no harm from this, believe my experience.

Key Features to Consider When Buying a Pacifier as a Breastfeeding Mom:

Nowadays you can find plenty of pacifiers of different styles and shapes on the market. Each baby is different so different infants will show interest for different pacifiers. But it is better to know the basic features to look for in pacifiers:

  1. Size and shape: It is better to buy a couple of pacifiers of different shapes. For example, you can buy one standard-shaped pacifier that has a straight, elongated nipple and an orthodontic one that has a rounded top and a flat bottom. You should remember that different manufacturers of pacifiers for babies offer pacifiers of different sizes, but most of the time you can find a size with some crossover: 0 to 3 months, 0 to 6 months, 6 to 18 months, 18 to 36 months. Some pacifier brands are geared toward a certain age and up – 6-plus months, for example.
  2. Material: The majority of the pacifiers in our review are made from one of two materials: latex and silicone. Pacifiers that are made from silicone are sturdier than the latex ones. They are very easy to clean and don’t retain odors. But what is more important they are great for babies that might be allergic to latex. On the other hand, latex pacifiers are softer than silicone ones.
  3. Construction: The construction of pacifiers can also differ: it can be a one-piece construction pacifier or made of three separate parts. If you buy a pacifier for your newborn baby that consists of three separate parts you need to make sure that the nipple does not come off because it can be a choking hazard.

Conclusion

Today we tried to choose the best pacifier for a breastfed baby. As we mentioned before each newborn baby is an individual. That is why it can take a lot of time to find the right pacifier for your baby. In our review, we offered you the best and most popular manufacturers of pacifiers on the market. But if your baby doesn’t like any of these options give the others a try!
